Whether operating an organic system or a conventional system, weed management is a constant battle.
In conventional systems, we often need to shift chemical controls in order to manage resistance and changing weather conditions.
In organic systems, it gets a bit complicated...not too long ago, the consensus was that weeds are not that much of an economic factor in a mature orchard and organic operators would till (or disc) the fields on occasion and mow in between tillage cycles. Weeds on the berms (the elevated area from tree to tree down the row) were only controlled by 'cross-discing', a time consuming and difficult operation that would often lead to additional pest infestations and crop challenges.
Here at Jackson Farms, we have developed a mechanical strategy for controlling weeds on our orchard berms and furrows(waterways) that helps maintain tree vigor, maximize water efficiency, enhance worker safety, and contribute to a better micro-environment within the orchard.
Take a look below at our innovative (and now copied) cultivation equipment, as well as some other popular implements and don't forget to check out the VIDEOS as well!
All of our pictures and videos are taken by ranch employees and managers on anything from flip-phones to digital cameras - no professional photographers here...
